Abandoned and Derelict Vessels Inventory
Abandoned and Derelict Vessels (ADVs) pose significant threats to marine ecosystems and navigation safety in Puerto Rico's coastal waters. These vessels can damage coral reefs, leak pollutants, create navigational hazards, and detract from coastal aesthetics. Maintaining an accurate database of ADV locations and conditions is essential for prioritizing removal efforts.
This project updated Puerto Rico's ADV database through systematic surveys of coastal waters, documenting vessel locations, types (barges, sailboats, etc.), conditions, and potential environmental impacts. The database serves as a critical tool for resource managers, helping coordinate vessel removal priorities and secure funding for marine debris cleanup operations.
Type: Marine Debris Assessment, Database Management
Focus: Abandoned and Derelict Vessels
Purpose: Prioritize vessel removal, protect marine habitats
