Groupers in Puerto Rico and USVI

Assessment and Conservation of Reef Grouper Species

About This Project

Groupers are ecologically and economically important reef fish species that serve as key predators in Caribbean reef ecosystems. This research project assesses grouper populations across Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, documenting species diversity, abundance, and size distributions.

The study employs various survey methods including visual censuses, photographic documentation, and laser caliper measurements to accurately assess fish size. Species documented include the critically endangered Nassau grouper, red hind, black grouper, tiger grouper, and several other important reef-associated grouper species.

Type: Population Assessment, Fisheries Research
Location: Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands
Species: Nassau Grouper, Red Hind, Black Grouper, Tiger Grouper, and others
