Protecting Manatees Through Awareness and Signage
The Antillean manatee is a threatened marine mammal that inhabits coastal waters of Puerto Rico. Protection of manatee habitat requires both physical safeguards and public awareness. This project installed specialized buoys in manatee zones to alert boaters to slow down and be vigilant for these gentle marine mammals.
The buoy installation process involves careful transportation of the buoys to the deployment site, strategic placement in known manatee areas, and securing them properly to withstand marine conditions. Community outreach accompanies the buoy installation to educate local boaters and water users about manatee conservation and the importance of slow speed zones.
